Reading Sumiko's article today in the Sunday Times prompted me to write something here..
She'd wrote that she'd lost a 23-yr friendship last year with a male colleague. And says, "the older i get, the more i've come to realise that, one, it's not worth getting upset when ppl disappoint you, because, more often than not, they don't give a hoot that they are letting you down; and two, it's pointless to depend on others to make you happy."
"Just because you want someone's life to revolve around yours doesn't necessarily mean that he wants that too. To inoculate yourself against disappointment, you have to be more self-sufficient -- to find ways to be at peace with yourself and be content with what you are and have... find that happy place within yourself where you can retreat to, to your own safe haven, if you like.... i've realised my own company wasn't half bad."
Well, for me, i'd lost a 7-yr friendship last yr. Though it was over something trivial, i'd tried more than once to offer the olive branch. But he did not bite. i'd always thought it was a pity.. and that those old graduation photos may only be a memory from now on.. "i can't bring back those days with you.." If i could turn back the clock, i wouldn't have said those things to him. I did not know that it mattered to him that much as it had to me as well. He could never understand.....
When the river of fate runs dry, i wish i could pour more into it... - fishbone
