Singapore grand prix 2008

I'm not a big fan of F1 but i had to watch tonight's race in my hometown. Spain's Fernando Alonso (Renault) took the champion today, claiming his 20th career triumph by 2.95 seconds over Germany's Nico Rosberg (Williams) and Britain's world championship leader Lewis Hamilton (McLaren Mercedes) who came in third.

The F1 race was an eye-opener for me, starting first from
1) the booklet on GP specially prepared by RBS (royal bank of Scotland group), which contained much 'omoshiroi' info on Formula One races/race teams/race strategy (i didn't know so much parameters go into sophisticated mathematical simulations that calculate the optimum approach for each race! and that tyres by Bridgestone come in 'soft' and 'super-soft'.. and that tyres get changed in 3 sec in a pit stop...)

2) the actual race itself (crashes lead to safety vehicles appearing to 'guide' all racers in the subsequent lap... and Ferrari's Felipe Massa's drive-off from the pit stop was especially horrifying, with the fuel hose still attached to his car and leaving one pit crew floored and subsequently carted off in a neck brace. and it was a miserable night for Ferrari with defending world champion Kimi Raikkonen ramming his car into the barriers with just four laps to go, ending his race... winner Alonso did not think he would win today's race, given that the engine of his Renault cut out during the 2nd qualifying session on sat, leaving him in 15th on the grid on sunday. in fact, he was quoted as saying on sat, "The race is lost. You can't overtake here and I'm starting from 15th, so I will be going out just to lap the track, but it's over already". well, it seems that miracles do happen in F1.. and we should not be giving up even when all seems gloomy and pointless.. =) )

interesting lessons from an exciting race..
